This book is a product of a symposium arranged through the cooperation of the National Cystic Fibrosis Research Foundation and cosponsored by the Foundation of Thanatology, Babies Hospital of Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center, and the Albany Medical College of Union University.

The aim of the symposium and, hence, the book is to "emphasize and attack the psychosocial problems" constantly encountered by those living with and struggling against chronic disease that ultimately ends in death—specifically, the chronic lung disease, cystic fibrosis. This book represents an excellent compilation of experiences from those skilled in the art of living with chronic sorrow.

The book deals with two major aspects: firstly, with the psychosocial aspects in this chronic lung disease; secondly, with how the patient, the relatives, and the care-givers might derive greater gratification in the living of life and be better prepared for death.
