I would certainly agree with Dr. Catlin that a more thorough explanation of our protocol is in order. As stated in the paper, 1,000 consecutive tonsillectomies performed from late 1964 through 1970 were reviewed. What we mean to say here is the results of 500 consecutive tonsillectomies performed by one surgeon are being compared to the results of 500 consecutive tonsillectomies performed by two other surgeons who use a somewhat different technique. The time span involved for the two groups is somewhat different, but no effort was made to select out patients. The data presented for group 1 was compiled by reviewing 500 consecutive tonsillectomies performed from January of 1967 to November 1970 by one surgeon who routinely cauterizes both poles and the center of the tonsillar fossa.
