At the close of the Symposium on Ear Surgery, Gummersbach near Cologne, West Germany, May 13-18, 1973, the Schwartze Centennial Memorial Lecture was presented. The following describes the fundamental work of one century ago when the scientific basis for ear surgery was laid down.
In 1873, Hermann Schwartze, together with his assistant, Eysell, published a treatise on mastoidectomy. In this publication, the authors dealt with the history of the surgical procedures in the mastoid process. Petit (who died in 1750, according to the index at the end of the publication) opened the mastoid on two occasions— one time with hammer and chisel and the second time with a perforator. In 1776, Jasser, in one case, accomplished the opening of the mastoid with a trocard and, in another case, with a probe. The operations were performed for a "caries" of the processus mastoideus in the latter and a case of deafness
