In Szeged, Hungary, during August 1971, a speech symposium immediately followed the Seventh International Congress on Acoustics held in Budapest. This book contains 80 of the symposium's papers; 38 in English, 34 in German, seven in French, and one in Russian, a reminder that scientific interest in speech perception and production crosses all language boundaries. The collection further documents the extensive crossdisciplinary interest that exists in speech and language research as the papers were presented by linguists, phoneticians, engineers, physiologists, speech pathologists, physicians, and educators.
The studies reported are, for the most part, highly theoretical, a few approaching esoteric proportions. Typical examples are: suprasegmental characteristics of normative intonational variants; the relationship between volume, speed, and duration of expired air to the curve of the lips in the production of different consonants, in different languages; waveshape of voiced speech sounds; mathematics of determining vocal tract area; electromyography of the lip musculature
