To the Editor.— Did you really publish the article¹ which appeared on page 482 of the June 1973 issue of the Archives or was I hopefully having optical hallucinations? To suggest that we put a patient through the time and expense of a lateral soft tissue x-ray as a substitute for a routine physical examination advocates, in my opinion, total abdication of responsibility on the part of the initial examining physician. We in otolaryngology obviously have fallen down in our jobs a little if our colleagues in primary care areas are ordering x-rays rather than using a head mirror and a laryngeal mirror to examine the base of the tongue. I can only deplore the implications in this article which suggests that radiographic examination might in any way substitute for what should be routine physical diagnostic procedures.
