This edition of the ARCHIVES is devoted to a State-of-the-Art Report concerning our present knowledge about the effect of viral infection on human communication. The report has been planned and prepared by the Information Center for Hearing, Speech, and Disorders of Human Communication, a center funded by the National Institute of Neurological Diseases and Stroke. This center has been charged with the responsibility of collecting and disseminating new information to the professional group interested in the problems of human communication. To accomplish this they have undertaken a number of informational activities. The State-of-the-Art Report presented here is designed to bring together present knowledge from a number of disciplines which may shed more light upon the effect of viral infection on hearing.
