Dr. Francis L. Lederer was born in Chicago, Sept 18,1898, and died April 3, 1973. He received his BS degree from the University of Chicago in 1918 and his MD degree from Rush Medical College in 1921. He completed an internship and residency at the North Chicago Hospital under Dr. Joseph C. Beck, following which he married Anne Pollock. Together they visited the universities of Berlin, Vienna, and Prague where Dr. Lederer obtained postgraduate training in the specialty of ear, nose and throat. He was certified by the American Board of Otolaryngology in 1926, just two years after its founding.

Dr. Lederer became a member of the Department of Otolaryngology of the University of Illinois in 1922 and was appointed Acting Head of the department in 1925.
