Examination.—The American Board of Medical Specialties announced that the first Basic Surgical Examination to test fundamental knowledge common to all surgical fields will be given Nov 20, 1972. The Basic Surgical Examination was developed by a Committee of the Surgical Council which consists of representatives of each of the Specialty Boards in surgical and related fields holding membership in the American Board of Medical Specialties. The examination was designed primarily for residents in training in all fields of surgery and does not duplicate or replace any examination now conducted by the individual specialty boards.

The examination will not presently be required by any specialty board, but should be offered on a voluntary basis for use as a measurement device for the benefit of residents and also their program directors.

Now being developed are the necessary information on application blanks, instructions to candidates, and methods of payment.
