To the Editor.—In "A Controlled Study of Adenotonsillectomy" by Dr. Noel Roydhouse, which appeared in the December 1970 issue of the ARCHIVES, reference is made to the controlled studies of McKee and of me and my colleagues. It is stated that, in these studies, "the results, which disregarded patients who did not profit from the operations and who, perhaps, did not require it, were not very impressive and produced varying conclusions."
It seems to me that all three controlled trials are in sufficient agreement to avoid serious controversy; but I would like to say, as far as our paper is concerned, that although we did eliminate from our study those children referred to us who had no indication at all for operation, we certainly did not disregard patients who did not profit from it. Every patient whose tonsils and adenoids were removed was followed for two years (except defaulters)
