PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1

A 75-year-old man had an infraauricular mass on the left side which he had first noted approximately three months previously. The mass had been slowly progressive in size and nonpainful. There was an associated 4.5 kg (10 lb) weight loss. Two weeks prior to his initial visit he had had a facial lesion on the left side "scraped" by a dermatologist. On examination there was a 2--cm x 2.5-cm firm, movable, nontender mass just below the left auricle. There was no associated facial paresis or paralysis noted. In addition, there was a 0.5-cm x 0.5-cm erythematous lesion on the left cheek area which was the residua of the lesion previously removed. A parotid sialogram clearly verified a mass within the gland substance. A superficial parotidectomy on the left side was performed. Photomicrographs of the pathologic specimen are seen in Fig . . .
