I am grateful to David McPherson for his kind words about my paper, and pleased that my observations are in general agreement with his.

I am not sure that I fully comprehend the thrust of McPherson's first exception. Apparently he assumes that I adhere rigidly to the position that the acoustic reflex simply does not appear in the otherwise normal ears of a certain percentage of young children. I certainly raised that possibility in discussing the fact that a significant portion of our 2 to 5-year-old age group with normal audiometric findings failed to show the acoustic reflex. On page 318,I alluded to a hypothesis of "maturation of the reflex arc, up to perhaps early adulthood." But in the very next sentence I raised the alternative explanation that, "one cannot exclude the possibility that the high incidence of no response in the 2 to 5 age group merely reflects . . .
