To the Editor.—I was very interested in the article "Transconioscopy in Laryngeal Carcinoma" by Dr. Sorensen (ARCH OTOLARYNG92:28, 1970).
May I respectfully, however, point out the potential dangers of this procedure, which inevitably creates a track leading from the trachea through the soft tissues to the skin. It has on several occasions been shown that creation of such a track, by a tracheotomy, in the presence of a laryngeal carcinoma, carries a high risk of implantation and recurrent tumor.
Presumably the same risk applies to transconioscopy.
