PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1

A 36-year-old woman was struck in the right side of her face during an auto accident eight months before admission. Several weeks later she was aware of a mass along the outer gingiva of the right mandible. This gradually enlarged over a four-month period. Roentgenograms showed no bone or dental abnormality. A firm, blue, 2-cm mass bulged beneath an intact mucosa. At surgery, the lesion was entirely submucosal without attachment to the underlying bone. It bled freely but was readily excised.
