PATHOLOGIC QUIZ CASE 1

A 3-year-old boy had a severe upper respiratory tract infection with pharyngitis four weeks before admission. He failed to improve with antibiotic therapy and became anorexic and weak. On admission to the hospital, he was afebrile, appeared chronically ill, and was in mild respiratory distress. The soft palate was distended by a firm, nonmobile mass which deviated the uvula to the left. An enlarged right tonsil further narrowed the oropharyngeal airway. The remainder of the physical examination disclosed no lymphadenopathy or abdominal masses. Results of a peripheral blood cell examination and chest x-ray film were normal. The soft palate was biopsied (Fig 1 and 2).
