Immediately following the 24th International Congress of Physiological Sciences in Washington DC in 1968 several "satellite symposia" were held at various locations in this country. Although not apparent from its title, this book consists of the papers presented at one of these symposia held at Haverford College. In the preface to the text it states that the scope of the conference was "... limited, deliberately, the physical and physiological properties of the airways and how they can be altered by drugs, dust or disease." The highly laudible intent of this conference was to provide for communication between pulmonary physiologists and pulmonary pharmacologists because some felt there had not been adequate exchange of information concerning mechanisms of drug actions and methods for detecting the same.
