To the Editor.
—I would like to offer a comment regarding the hearing screening criterion selected by Istre and Barbaccia in their article entitled, "Hearing Results in Multiphasic Screening," which appeared in the March 1970 ARCHIVES (91:266-272). The authors developed their criterion for abnormal hearing on the basis of the average response for the "speech frequencies" (500, 1,000, and 2,000 hertz units). If the participant's hearing for these frequencies averaged 2 dB or better, hearing was judged to be essentially normal for understanding conversational speech. If the participant's hearing levels averaged poorer than 25 dB, the hearing was recorded as abnormal.
If one applies the 25 dB criterion to the so-called ski-slope audiogram, it is possible to classify as "normal" an individual who has the following thresholds for the speech frequencies: 500 Hz = 0 dB, 1,000 Hz = 15 dB, and 2,000 Hz = 50 dB. His average for the test
