To the Editor.

—I am pleased to see that the paper dealing with hearing loss on Guam has been read by at least one critical observer.

Regarding our definition of severe hearing loss (inability to hear at 40 dB or greater at one or more of the frequencies from 500 to 6,000 cycles per second), I readily grant this may not be accepted by most, or even one audiologist as the definition of severe hearing loss. However, in lieu of any generally accepted definition of hearing loss, whether mild, moderate or severe, I could do no more than choose from the many standards that have been suggested. Because techniques and personnel conducting the hearing tests were similar to those employed by Brody et al, whose report appeared in the ARCHIVES in 1965, I was most influenced by their definition of severe hearing loss, ie, hearing loss at 40 dB . . .
