PROBLEMS IN HEARING LOSS

To the Editor.

—I should like to comment on some of the misstatements and just plain errors which I have noted in the February 1970, issue of the ARCHIVES.

Item.

—"Severe hearing loss was defined as inability to hear at 40 dB at one or more of the same frequencies" (page 149).

Comment.

—I know of no one who would classify this degree of loss as more than "mild."

Item.

—"Note that the frequency of hearing loss among Guamanian school children is at least four times as great as that of children in North American cities . . ." (page 150).

Comment.

—Considering the differences in testing conditions and standards, this finding is hardly unexpected.

Item.

—"The median overall sound pressure level (SPL), regardless of the distance from the sound source, was 106 dB . . ." (page 208).
