AFTER a decade of rewarding service to his professional associates and especially to the ARCHIVES OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY as the Chief Editor, it is my duty to announce reluctantly the retirement of George E. Shambaugh, Jr., and simultaneously a pleasure to announce the appointment by the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association of Bobby Ray Alford of Houston to succeed him. This recommendation was submitted to the Trustees with the unanimous blessing of the Editorial Board and this office.

Bobby was born in Dallas, received his medical training at Baylor University College of Medicine, and completed his residency under the affiliated program of Baylor. In 1962, after a fellowship in neurophysiology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, Baltimore, he began his rapid climb up the academic ladder at his alma mater. He advanced from assistant professor of otolaryngology to professor and chairman of the department in five years.
