THE "Contemporaries" department of Modern Medicine for Oct 21, 1968,¹ concerns Dr. David G. Cogan, full-time Director of the Howe Laboratory of Ophthalmology of Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary, and, until two years ago, Chief Editor of the Archives of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Cogan is known to otolaryngologists for the syndrome of nonsyphilitic interstitial keratitis and cochlear deafness, known as Cogan's disease. A graduate of Harvard Medical School, Dr. Cogan, early after his residency, joined the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary where he combined private practice, teaching, and research. After a time he decided that, for him, private practice and research were not compatible, and that the rewards of private practice could not compare with the greater rewards of being a member of a "fraternity of people with the same curiosities, driven by the same hope of turning up something useful; the dream that you'll accomplish . . .
