MIDDLE EAR CLEARANCE

To the Editor.—I would like to comment on the article by J. Sade, "Ciliary Activity and Middle Ear Clearance" (ARCHIVES, 86: 128-135 [Feb] 1967).

The anterior half or two-thirds of the middle ear lining is a true mucosa-bearing ciliaand secreting mucus.

The ears examined were of two kinds: group A (20 cases) ears with large dry perforations, and group B (12 cases) ears with large perforations and infected mucosa. The experiments concerning clearance are perfect.

I voice reservations about the scope of the histologic picture in Sadé's remarks, "this picture being entirely different in acute and acutely relapsing cases of otitis media, with or without perforation of the drum. In these instances true mucosa bearing cilia etc..." may not be found in the middle ear, such structures being (as I proved throughout a series of my papers including one comprehensive monograph) fundamentally alien to the middle ear cavities where . . .
