INSECTICIDE AND THE LARYNX-Reply

To the Editor.—Dr. Klayman states that he has seen several patients with cancer of the larynx who were nonsmokers and who had been exposed to insecticides. It would be easier to evaluate this finding if we knew the sex of the patients and the sites of the cancer within the larynx as it has been shown that there are etiological differences in intrinsic and extrinsic cancers of the larynx.

When obtaining a history on insecticides, one should specify the type of insecticides to

which the patient was exposed. A relationship of cancer of the lung to long-term exposure to arsenical insecticides appears to be established. It is possible that such a relationship may also apply to lesions of the larynx, particularly of the vocal cord.

Dr. Klayman is to be complimented on practicing "office epidemiology." In the future it would be better if additional information were obtained on these . . . [Full Text PDF of this Article]
