Medicolegal Hints: A New Department

Reputable physicians are increasingly concerned by the trend toward malpractice litigation. The very quality of medical care is threatened when a physician's scientific judgment is colored by fear of being sued in case the treatment fails or the patient dies.

The physician who is faced with a lawsuit is likely to find himself at a disadvantage because legal concepts and terminology are completely unfamiliar to him. Because the progress of scientific medicine is threatened by the increasing popularity of malpractice suits, the Archies is beginning a new department entitled "Medical-Legal Hints." These are brief condensations from the department in the JAMA entitled "Law and Medicine." The following editorial is an appropriate introduction to this new department. . . .
