The Honors List for last New Year's included the first otolaryngologist in Australia to be knighted for his achievements and contributions to medicine. Sir George Halliday joins Sir Victor Negus and Sir Terence Cawthorne as the only living otolaryngologists who have been so honored.

Australian born, George Clifton Halliday graduated in medicine from the University of Sydney in 1925. After several years of general practice he decided on a career in otolaryngology and set sail for Edinburgh where he underwent two years of intensive training under the keen eye of the late J. S. Fraser, and gained his FRCS (Edinburgh). On returning to Sydney he was appointed to the Otolaryngologic Staff of the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital and later became senior otolaryngologic surgeon at St. George Hospital.
