CRITIQUE OF CHANDLER'S PAPER ON ORAL CYTOLOGY

To the Editor.—During the last few months Dr. J. R. Chandler of the Division of Otolaryngology, University of Miami School of Medicine, and I have been conducting a somewhat epistolary debate on the validity of his paper "The Nonvalue of Oral Cytology," which Dr. Chandler read before the meeting of the American Society for Head and Neck Surgery in Puerto Rico last April.

While we in no way wished to dissuade Dr. Chandler from publishing his paper, we felt we would be remiss in our duty to the public had we not informed him of our reservations about his paper, which are essentially these:

  1. The paper contains a number of rather tenuous interpretations which impart a definite bias to Dr. Chandler's conclusions.
  2. Dr. Chandler seizes on several incidents of improper and irresponsible use of oral cytology (over which the Public Health Service has no control) to condemn
