To the Editor.—I feel that Professor von Bekesy's aim in his article "Pressure and Shearing Forces as Stimuli of Labyrinthine Epithelium" was more than to simply explain the mode of action of shearing forces. Although it was probably only the occasion of Professor Mygind's articles that prompted him to write this particular article, he gives not only good advice but also a warning to ear surgeons who hope to be able to contribute to developments in modern ear surgery.
He is right when he criticizes people who, without experience in difficult experimental work, attempt to develop theories regarding function. Often these people do not realize that they don't have to be restricted to the library or to the microscopic examination of histological sections. Due to developments in experimental techniques and instrumentation in the past decade, it is, however, no longer necessary to be restricted to "19th century style theories"
