Use of Forehead Flap for Closure of Palatine Defects

SURGICAL treatment of carcinoma of the palate, or maxilla, often leaves the patient with an uncomfortable crippling palatal defect which interferes with eating, speaking, and breathing.

The most common and simplest method of correction is through the use of a prosthesis, and most patients can achieve satisfactory rehabilitation in this way. Dependence on prosthetic appliances, however, leaves much to be desired, since the method has several disadvantages: (1) a prosthesis artisan who understands and can cope with the problems may not be available. The product of the friendly interested dentist will usually take many weeks for completion, and will often prove unsatisfactory. (2) during healing the defect may change in shape considerably and the fit of the prosthesis may be a problem for many months.
