Tympanoplasty

THE LITERATURE for 1964 on tympanoplasty contains some interesting investigative papers, more findings on pathologies, and more reports on results obtained with reconstruction procedures.

Research in Tympanoplasty

Alberti1 demonstrated the centrifugal migration of epithelium from the umbo to the cartilaginous portion of the external meatus where it is finally shed. Infection may stimulate the formation of keratinized cells which desquamate before migration can carry them to the exterior. A description and anatomical classification of the mucosal folds in the middle ear are reported by Proctor.2 Their embryological origin is also reviewed. The significance of the various compartments in disease states is pointed out.

Comment.—Cholesteatomas arising in Prussak's space usually extend into the superior incudal space and thence into the medial incudal space, antrum or anterior compartment of the attic or both.
