Postmeningitic Labyrinth Ossification With Stapes Fixation

Introduction

IN A previous paper the analysis of the findings in 45 serially sectioned temporal bones from patients suffering from labyrinthine otosclerosis with and without stapes ankylosis showed that the only pathological findings in the ossicles were arthritic changes in the incudomalleal joint resulting from a displacement of the ossicular chain in patients with ankylosis and displacement of the stapedial footplate. In none of the ossicles were changes observed which in any way could be interpreted as prestages or early stages of otosclerosis.

A comparison of these findings with those in a case of bilateral nonotosclerotic stapes fixation as the result of a postmeningitic ossification of the labyrinthine cavities seemed of interest.

Report of a Case

A 48-year-old woman died from lymphosarcoma of the neck with generalized metastases. She had meningitis at the age of about 3 years and has been deaf since that time.
