Otitis Media and Complications

The literature on otitis media and complications for 1963 was enriched by the publication of the papers and panel discussions of the Second Workshop on Reconstructive Middle Ear Surgery held in Chicago. The 20 articles and panel discussions on chronic infective ear disease were published in the September and October numbers of the Archives of Otolaryngology and deserve prolonged study by otologists, and, since they are readily available, only a few will be reviewed.

Acute Otitis Media

Wilson1 (Dublin) stated that children from poor living conditions were more prone to ear infections, which were more severe and had more complications. One interesting case was a child with typical cholesterol granulomatosis who was not operated on because of a cardiac condition. The posterosuperior tympanic perforation and profuse discharge were treated conservatively, and five years later the drum was found to be dry, intact, and with almost perfect hearing.
