Paracoccidioidomycosis (synonyms: South American blastomycosis, disease of Lutz-Splendore-Almeida, etc) is a systemic fungus disease not very familiar to the North American or European laryngologist, as till now it has been observed only in South and Central America. But it is not unthinkable that due to the present-day intercontinental migrations and to the modern easy and rapid means of communications, sporadic cases may be apt to appear in the future on other continents, maybe even sporadic endemic foci may occur in some up-to-now unusual places, provided that the ecological factors should be favorable for the evolution of the fungus.
Anyway, for the benefit of those colleagues who never had an opportunity to observe this extremely interesting mycosis profunda, I shall give a brief description of its most outstanding features.
