Cervical Caries With Retropharyngeal Abscess

Tuberculosis of the spine is regarded as the commonest manifestation of skeletal tuberculosis (Boyd, 1951) and is also one of the most dangerous. This is particularly true of tuberculous disease of the cervical vertebrae. The disease at this site often gives rise to cold abscess formation which manifests as a retropharyngeal abscess. In some cases and particularly in case of tuberculosis of the atlas and axis the risk of sudden quadriplegia and death are imminent.

The incidence of cervical caries has been reported to be low. In the series of 914 cases reported by Dobson,2 3.5% of the cases had cervical caries. Harrison6 reported a case of dysphagia resulting from tuberculosis of the axis.
