Exactly 25 years ago this month the first article by Julius Lempert on the fenestration operation appeared in the ARCHIVES OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY.

In otology, as in other scientific pursuits, discovery is a continuous process that builds upon the discoveries of the past. In this first article Lempert acknowledged the preceding work on surgery for otosclerosis, especially by Holmgren and Sourdille. In it he described in minute detail, and with excellent illustrations, a new one-stage surgical technique, and he presented the exact hearing results in the first series of cases operated on by this method. When one rereads this milestone in otologic surgery one is impressed anew by the author's scientific sincerity as well as by his consciousness of having made a truly significant scientific advance.
