Epithelial Papilloma of Nose and Accessory Sinuses

The term papilloma should be reserved for neoplastic growth characterized by a marked proliferation of the epithelial structure and less proliferation of the underlying connective tissue stroma. The true neoplastic nature of this lesion cannot be questioned, in contradistinction to the so-called soft papillomas, or better, mucosal or allergic polyps, which are definitely of an inflammatory etiology.
In 1883, Hopmann6 made the first attempt to separate the true epithelial papillomas as a distinct entity. He reported what he called papillary epithelioma of the ethmoid sinus. This most certainly was a true epithelial papilloma.
In 1935, Kramer and Som9 reviewed the literature up to that date and found only 81 cases of epithelial papilloma, adding five of their own. They claimed that these tumors are more common in the ethmoid and antral regions. Reviewing most of the cases in the literature, it becomes obvious that in a great majority
