This is a timely report on the surgery of deafness written by G. Portmann, M. Portmann, and G. Claverie of the University of Bordeaux, Department of Otolaryngology. This paperback volume of 491 pages is an extraordinary compilation of current thinking in the two fields of otologic surgery, namely, tympanoplasty and surgery of the stapedial vestibular region.
The authors have arranged a most orderly and systematic exposition of a recent look along these two subjects, starting out with an excellent summary of the physiological anatomy of the hearing organ and including a brief but interesting history of otologic surgery. The first portion of the book which is devoted to tympanoplasty includes sections on pathology and on diagnosis. The diagnostic aspect, in addition to audiometric and otoscopic details, includes a very worthwhile chapter on radiologic aspects of tympanoplasty written by Dr. G. Guillen.
