This book is a collection of papers presented at the eighth day of the meeting of the German Society of Surgery of the Face and Jaw held in Hamburg, August, 1958.

The first section deals with the prevention and control of pain about the face. Subjects discussed included the physiology of pain, various anesthetics and sedatives, methods of administration of local and general anesthetics, untoward effects, the indications and methods of treatment of trigeminal neuralgia, and control of pain about the face of many sources-dental or due to malignancy.

In the second section there is a series of papers dealing with the newer methods of treating harelip and cleft palate. The third section deals with fractures of the face and mandible.
