Combined Neurofibroma and Carcinoma in the Larynx

Of the benign neoplasms which appear in the larynx, neurofibromas are usually considered to be one of the rarest. In the past they have been reported occasionally either as isolated tumors confined to the larynx1-11 or accompanying multiple neurofibromatosis.12 Their rarity is attested to by the report of New and Erich,13 who found one such neoplasm in a review of 722 cases with benign lesions in the larynx seen at the Mayo Clinic over a 30-year period. Van Loon and Diamond14 also reported only one laryngeal neurofibroma during a 12-year period in which a large group of laryngeal lesions were seen. Fisher and Odess15 found 19 cases reported and added 2 more cases. Figi and Stark16 in a later study, observed that 25 cases with laryngeal neurofibromatosis had been reported in the world literature by 19 authors and added 5 similar cases.
