Anatomy

It is common to run across the term "retromolar region" in books and articles on cancerology. The term is used to designate the part of the buccal cavity which lies between the two dental arcades on either side and behind the roots of the last molar teeth, and which establishes a communication between the medial and vestibular portions of the buccal cavity when the dental arcades lie in contact. However such a definite anatomical "region" has no existence as far as could be vertified by an ample search of the literature. Accordingly, we shall call this part of the buccal cavity the retromolar "area" rather than "region," seeing that it lacks definite anatomical limits although it can always be identified as a locality.
