This monograph is built around the experimental work on tonsillar physiology and pathology as carried on at the department of professor Michele Arslan in Padova. The latter, in his foreword, emphasizes the importance of a similar synthesis on problems of morphology, physiology, and pathology to arrive at an understanding of clinical problems. The discussion is opened by 36 pages of a historical outline (by Premuda and Fioretti) followed by a chapter on comparative anatomy amply supplied with synoptic charts. The subsequent sections deal with embryogenesis, postnatal evolution and aging, microscopical anatomy, participation in intermediate metabolism, role in "dysreactivity"—allergy, shock—finally, written by Michele Arslan, focal pathogenesis. The bibliography occupies 36 pages, testifying to the broad basis of the study.
