Pharyngolaryngeal Disturbances Due to Cervical Spondylosis

In 1898 Pierre Marie and in 1908 Mare Hardour drew attention for the first time to disturbances of the throat and esophagus in the course of rheumatic inflammation of the cervical spine. J. Terracol in 1925, Halphen in 1926, J. Piquet in 1951, and Boulet and Gerecourt in 1952 have described precisely these changes as "syndrome pharyngo-oesophagien" in the form of motor disturbances of the pharynx and the upper part of the esophagus, as well as the feeling of sorness and stiffness there. This syndrome due to rheumatic changes mainly in the middle part of the cervical spine was finally defined by these authors as "dyskinesis pharyngo-oesophagiennes" or "arthrose cervicale dysphagique" (Terracol). This author distinguishes cases in which motor disturbances of the pharynx and the upper part of the esophagus prevail, causing difficulties in swallowing, from the second sensitive form called also "paraesthesiae pharyngis."
