Introduction

The problem of the bacteriostatic properties of the tonsil parenchyma and of the presence in it of antibodies has been a subject of interest to a number of authors, (Berggren and Hellmann, 1931; Prásek and Zuk,⁸ 1932; Schürmann,¹¹ 1954, Taillens,¹³ 1950, Wright,¹⁴ 1950). Until now, however, there has been no study to determine definitely the kind and quantity of such antibodies. Lately, in connection with researches on the behavior of antibodies in the course of tonsillitis chronica, we have identified one of them as a specific antistreptococcal antibody, i. e., antistreptolysin O (ASO) (Malecki and Grande,^5,6 1955, 1956).

The object of the present paper is to discover an eventual correlation between the level of ASO in the tonsils and ASO in the blood serum, the weight of the tonsils, and the number of plasma cells contained in the parenchyma of the tonsils.
