Dr. Hayes Martin, in his Foreword to this volume, stresses the patient-doctor relationship at the initial visit, when a diagnosis, at least a tentative one, may be made. This holds true also for the dentist who may observe a "curious area in the mouth." Again, early is the important word, and the diagnostic triad of early medicine should be kept in mind—is it cancer, syphilis or tuberculosis? The many illustrations in black and white serve the text well, and an effort is made throughout to show each disease in its varying stages. At the end of each chapter "Reading References" serve as a bibliography. In a work devoted to lesions of both the soft and hard parts of the mouth and face (sinuses), it seems unusual that no mention is made of tonsil tumors. Carcinoma of the tonsils is by no means rare.
