It has long been known to otologists that the incidence of deafness and ear infections in patients with cleft palates is high. Notwithstanding the importance of this subject, a study of the literature revealed but few articles on the problem. One enlightening article by Sataloff and Fraser¹ was found in which 30 cases were reviewed. In this series, only three persons had normal hearing. All the remaining cases showed significant hearing loss and ear pathology. In view of their findings and the dearth of information dealing with the subject, we decided it might be helpful to evaluate the cases from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary and the Massachusetts General Hospital which had been operated on during the past 10 years.
