NONMALIGNANT TUMORS—OSTEOMA

HALLBERG and Begley⁶² present a review of 51 cases of osteoma of the sinuses; 36 patients were men and 15 women. The majority were in the middle decades. Forty of the cases involved the frontal, nine the ethmoid and two the maxillary sinuses. The average duration of signs and symptoms at the time of examination was 3.7 years. Several unusual cases are reported. In a man of 28, complaining of severe headaches for several months, amnesia and weakness of one arm developed. Roentgenograms revealed a large frontal osteoma with an encephalocele. Operation disclosed a chronic brain abscess and pneumatocele. It was believed that the presence of air and the infection resulted from penetration of the dura and tip of the frontal lobe by the growing mass, permitting infectious material to enter when the patient coughed or blew his nose.
