Acute retropharyngeal abscess usually occurs in the age group of from 6 months to 5 years. It may occur in older children and adults, although such an occurrence is not common. Abscess formation usually develops from infection which has extended to the retropharyngeal lymph nodes. The following case report is of interest because it was felt that this particular abscess was secondary to infection in a regrowth of adenoid tissue.

C. S., a white boy aged 6, was seen in consultation at the request of his pediatrician, Dr. T. E. Strain.

The mother stated that the child had had a tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy at the age of 4 (performed by a competent otolaryngologist elsewhere). Recovery was uneventful. He had had no special illness since then.
