An Unusual Case with Progressive Involvement of Waldyer's Ring and the Larynx, Bronchus and Pleura

Extramedullary plasma cell tumors, which are not as infrequently reported as they were some years ago, still form an interesting group of mesenchymal growths, especially on account of their microscopic similarity to the better known plasma cell multiple myelomas of bone. In an earlier communication, Thibaudeau and I¹ reported the occurrence of an extramedullary plasmocytoma originating in the nasopharynx and showing a second simultaneous growth in the hypopharynx. At that time this case was the twentieth reported of involvement of the upper respiratory passages by such type of neoplasm. In the interim an additional case has been seen at this institute.

Our second case was observed over the period from 1943 to 1947 and seemed to be of enough general interest to bear reporting in detail, especially since it appeared to throw light on a possible and not much mentioned mode of dissemination, i. e., implantation metastasis.
