IN THE DEATH of Dr. George E. Shambaugh Sr., on Nov. 30, 1947, the otologic profession in America lost one of its most distinguished members. Although Dr. Shambaugh had been retired for a number of years on account of physical disability, he had been, almost since graduation, one of the eminent pioneers in otologic research, an evaluation of which, by his eminent colleague, Dr. J. G. Wilson, follows.
Almost from the beginning Dr. Shambaugh devoted himself to a careful research study of the physiology and anatomy of the internal ear, and in addition had an international reputation as a teacher and clinician of the first water.
He was the founder and first editor-in-chief of the ARCHIVES OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY, and organizer of the American Board of Otolaryngology. He was a fellow of all the senior societies concerned with his specialty, and had been president of both the American Otological Society and
