The devices to be described were conceived by Miss E. H. Middleton, director of nurses at Puumaile Hospital, and have been found of such value in carrying out bronchoscopic examinations that their use should be reported.
The usual bronchoscopic team calls for a second assistant to hold the shoulders of the patient so that the head may be elevated without the shoulders being raised. Not only does this require more help but this assistant has difficulty in preventing the shoulders from sliding to one side or the other. To obviate this and the need of a second assistant the following adaptation was made.
A metal bar of proper width and thickness to fit the slots in the shoulder braces commonly used on surgery tables is bolted to the end of the table which we use for bronchoscopy. The convex surface of the braces is covered with sponge rubber. They are
