RECONSTRUCTION OF THE FACIAL NERVE

Reconstruction of the facial nerve from the point of view of the otologist implies a restoration of its function by surgical means. In the main two procedures are advocated, the grafting of a nerve transplant and the end to end anastomosis. Both have been the subject of careful scientific research which has broadened knowledge of nerve regeneration immeasurably and created an epoch in the progress of surgery.

Fundamental principles have been evolved which are now at the disposal of the surgeon and when put to practical use give rise to results of a most gratifying character. While basic concepts are fairly well formulated and definitive technics established, much experimental work is now in progress which gives promise of improving and refining the methods which have been given avowed acclaim.
