The American Academy of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology will again offer its home study courses in the fundamentals of the two specialties, beginning August 1.
These courses were intended primarily for residents in specialized institutions that give no formalized instruction in fundamentals. The committee reports, however, that many physicians preparing for examinations given by special boards and many who were practicing in small communities without facilities for postgraduate instruction were included in the first year's registration of 465. A registration of about 150 had been expected.
Each registrant received on the first of each month a list of reading in standard textbooks designated by chapters. At the end of the month twenty questions covering this material were sent to the registrant. These were to be answered and returned to the committee. For each month one person was in charge of correcting and grading the papers, aided by a group of assistants,
